Workshop format
We propose an original 60 to 90 mn workshop experience: the “Proximity Fresk” designed by researchers from Chaire ETI at IAE Paris Sorbonne. The idea is to raise awareness about the power of urban proximities amongst multiple stakeholders – citizens, urban planners, city representatives, entrepreneurs, mobility providers, policy makers, children, researchers – to rethink neighbourhood planning and living.

Workshop background
City centers are saturated with vehicles, while average occupancy rates of office buildings do not exceed 40% on average. Each morning, millions of residents living in cities and suburban areas commute to activity hubs concentrated on a fraction of the territory. This pendulum and centralized conception of work, dominated by carbon-based commuting prevents functional
and social diversity, distributed urban centralities, active mobility and environmental resilience at neighbourhood scale. This automobile dependency mobility also creates inequalities in access to decent housing, employment, education, healthcare, sports, culture, green spaces, and local supply chains. It exacerbates stress, psychosocial disorders, and environmental and noise sollution. Numerous studies show that beyond the environmental and climate crisis, half of the population would prefer to live and work in their neighborhood, and 100% of Westerners wish to work within 30 minutes of their homes. Our daily lifestyles have a direct impact on the quality of our communities, cities, and the living world around us. In this workshop, participants will rethink daily routines of various user profiles (student, retired couple single parent, impaired person, migrant …) to open new perspectives on neighbourhood design using the proximity ontology developed by Chaire ETI around 6 essential functions: living, working, learning, enjoying, supplying and caring. In this vision, daily life unfolds within a 15-to-30-minute radius by foot, bike, or public transport.

Means of action to improve “proximity living” include:
– Leveraging digital technologies to provide remote access to services: working from home, online learning etc to avoid daily commuting.
– Mutualizing existing infrastructures or experiences: like sharing social activities, childcare services, co-working, car-pooling to leverage available assets and services
– Offering alternatives to individual carbonized car mobility: walking, biking, public transportation, carsharing etc
– Rethinking time use of activities: extending opening hours of public services, transportation, facilities etc to increase accessibility

The goal of these measures is to challenge conventional city planning practices based on functional zoning to improve social mixity, quality of life and to build environmental resilience. In practice, this also involves aligning public and private stakeholders behind a new urban vision and narrative: the happy city of x minutes!

At the end of the workshop, participants are invited to write “Proximity Resolutions” to empower them to change their daily routines

Catherine Gall – A French native who has studied and worked in 5 countries, Catherine Gall is a creative researcher with
a passion for applying human centered design methodologies to solve urban and territorial challenges. With a background in Business Management from the Strasbourg School of Business, she has worked in strategy and innovation for more than 25 years in the corporate interiors industry (Steelcase Inc). She has conducted workplace transformation projects for leading corporations and education institutions in Europe, the USA, the Middle East, Africa, and China. She led and co-authored the exploratory
ethnographic research called “Culture Code” aiming at investigating cultural factors that influence the design of working and learning environments in 11 countries.
Since March 2020, she is the Executive Director of the Sorbonne based Research Lab called Chaire ETI (Entrepreneurship territory Innovation) created by Professors Carlos Moreno, Didier Chabaud and Florent Pratlong and specialized in challenging conventional city planning models. Chaire ETI is well known today for the body of research called “the 15-minute City / 30 mn territory Model”. She is a regular author and visiting lecturer in several universities in Europe. She is constantly seeking to understand the interplay of space, technology, culture and behaviors to drive positive impact for human beings and organizations.
