How does the sea shape the quality of our lives, and what can the Italian culture of living by the water teach us about well-being, freedom and longevity? In this presentation, marine engineering and yacht design students from the University of Genoa take us on a journey from the Mediterranean way of life to the future of marine design. They explore the yacht not simply as a vessel or a symbol of luxury, but as architecture liberated from the ground – a space that brings together nature, mobility, beauty, comfort and a sense of freedom.
The presentation also explores longevity in design: how can we create objects that remain valuable, adaptable and beautiful for decades rather than being replaced by the next generation of products? A particular focus will be placed on traditional Italian sailing boats, some more than a century old, which are still actively used today – alongside experienced sailors, many of whom are over 70. It is a story about the relationship between people and water, the Italian art of living by the sea, and how design can support beauty, freedom and a longer, better life – for both people and the objects that accompany them.
